For starters, when you spend more time working on ‘office’ work than on your profession, you have reached that point. When you are spending your weekends playing ‘catchup’ on all the other work that is left over, you have reached that point. If you are spending more time doing work that you cannot bill someone for, you have reached that point. For your business to take on the next step you need to decide how you want to take that next step, in-house employees and all that entails, or contract workers and only pay them for specific jobs. There are pros and cons to both and each decision needs to be taken with careful planning and research. There is so much that can be done with and through technology today and with careful planning you can accomplish these goals and see your business flourish.
Computers, servers, networks, smart phones, tablets if these words make your eyes cross and sound like a foreign tongue then this is something you need to outsource, and I don’t mean to your neighbors son or your best friends high school student. This may have worked 15 years ago but in today’s world you need someone who understands how your business works, how the technology can help you work better and who can provide you with the best service within your time frame.
This also applies to accounting, billing and your general office work. It can be possible for small offices to have employees do more than one role and wear different hats but this is only a temporary solution. Bookkeepers are great to have for day to day functions but this may be best handled by an administrative assistant and hire an outside billing professional to handle to the monthly billing and reports, if you see this happening for a short time every month this might be best to be handled outside of your office.
Its important to know you limitations and call in help before you start to get overwhelmed. By being able to see the larger picture and trying to reach your goals you can help your company grow and succeed.
